If you have oak trees on your property in Central Florida, oak wilt is a disease you need to know about. It’s caused by the fungus Ceratocystis fagacearum, and while it’s more commonly associated with oaks in Texas and the upper Midwest, Florida has its own concerns with this disease — particularly given how much our landscape depends on live oaks, laurel oaks, and water oaks.
Understanding how to identify oak wilt, what to do if you suspect it, and how to protect your healthy trees can save you thousands of dollars and preserve trees that might otherwise be lost.
What Is Oak Wilt?
Oak wilt is a vascular disease — the fungus invades the tree’s water-conducting system and essentially blocks the flow of water and nutrients from the roots to the canopy. The tree responds by trying to wall off the infection, but in the process, it often seals off its own vascular system, leading to rapid wilting and death.
The disease spreads in two main ways. First, it can travel through root grafts — underground connections between the root systems of nearby oaks of the same species. This means one infected tree can pass the disease to neighboring oaks without any above-ground contact. Second, it can be transmitted by sap-feeding beetles that carry fungal spores from infected trees to fresh wounds on healthy ones.
Which Oaks Are Most Vulnerable?
Not all oaks respond to the fungus the same way.
Red oak group (laurel oak, water oak): These species are the most susceptible and can die within weeks to a few months of infection. The disease moves rapidly through their vascular systems, and once symptoms appear, it’s usually too late to save the tree. This is particularly relevant in Central Florida, where laurel oaks are one of the most common landscape trees.
White oak group (live oak): Live oaks can also contract oak wilt, and in Florida they’re the species of greatest concern due to their landscape value and prevalence. Live oaks tend to decline more slowly than red oaks — over months to a year or more — and some infected live oaks can survive the disease, especially with treatment. However, live oaks are particularly vulnerable to spread through root grafts because their root systems often interconnect extensively.
Recognizing the Signs
Catching oak wilt early gives you the best chance of saving affected trees and preventing spread to healthy ones nearby. Here’s what to look for.
Leaf symptoms are usually the first visible sign. On red oaks like laurel and water oaks, you’ll see leaves wilting and browning from the margins inward, often with a pattern that looks like fall color but appearing at the wrong time of year. Affected leaves may show a sharp line between green and brown tissue. Leaves often drop while still partially green — this premature leaf drop is a hallmark symptom.
On live oaks, the pattern is slightly different. Leaves develop a condition called “veinal necrosis,” where the areas between leaf veins turn yellow or brown while the veins themselves initially stay green. The leaf looks striped or banded. Over time, the entire leaf browns and drops.
Crown dieback follows the leaf symptoms. You’ll notice sections of the canopy thinning out, starting from the tips of branches and moving inward. In red oaks, this can progress from first symptoms to a nearly bare canopy in just weeks.
Fungal mats may form under the bark of recently killed red oaks. These appear as raised areas on the trunk that sometimes crack the bark open. They produce a fruity odor that attracts the sap-feeding beetles responsible for long-distance spread. Fungal mats are less commonly documented on live oaks in Florida but are still possible.
Epicormic sprouting — small shoots emerging from the trunk or major limbs — can indicate stress. While not exclusive to oak wilt, sprouting in combination with crown dieback and leaf symptoms should raise concern.
What to Do If You Suspect Oak Wilt
Don’t prune. If you suspect oak wilt, stop all pruning on oaks in the area immediately. Fresh pruning wounds attract the beetles that spread the disease. If you must prune (for safety reasons, like a broken limb over a walkway), immediately seal the wound with pruning paint or latex paint. This is one of the few situations where wound sealing is recommended by arborists.
Contact a certified arborist who has experience with oak wilt. They can evaluate symptoms, take tissue samples for laboratory confirmation, and recommend a management plan. In Florida, your county’s UF/IFAS Extension office can also help with identification and testing.
Have the diagnosis confirmed. Oak wilt symptoms can look similar to other issues — drought stress, root damage, laurel wilt (a different disease), or even herbicide exposure. Laboratory testing of symptomatic tissue is the most reliable way to confirm oak wilt.
Treatment Options
Propiconazole (Alamo) injections are the primary treatment tool for oak wilt. This systemic fungicide is injected directly into the root flares of the tree, where it’s transported through the vascular system to fight the fungal infection. For live oaks showing early to moderate symptoms, propiconazole injections can be effective in halting the disease’s progression and allowing the tree to recover. Treatments may need to be repeated annually for several years.
However, this treatment works best as a preventive measure or early intervention. Trees that are severely symptomatic — with more than about 30% crown loss — have a much lower chance of recovery.
Trenching is used to disrupt root grafts and stop underground spread between neighboring trees. A trench (typically 4 feet deep) cut between an infected tree and healthy neighbors severs the root connections the fungus uses to travel. Trenching should be done at least 100 feet beyond the last symptomatic tree if possible to ensure all root connections are severed.
Removal of dead and dying trees helps reduce the source of fungal spores in the area. Dead red oaks that could develop fungal mats should be removed and the wood destroyed (chipped, burned, or buried) rather than stored as firewood, which can harbor the fungus.
Prevention Strategies for Central Florida Homeowners
Time your pruning carefully. The safest time to prune oaks in Florida is during the cooler, drier months — roughly November through February — when the beetles that spread oak wilt are least active and fresh wounds are less likely to attract them.
Paint pruning wounds immediately. If oaks must be pruned during warmer months (or if a limb breaks in a storm), seal the wound with pruning paint, latex paint, or even spray shellac right away. The goal is to prevent beetle access to fresh sapwood.
Avoid moving oak firewood. Transporting firewood from infected areas to new locations is one of the primary ways oak wilt spreads long distances. If you have oak firewood, use it locally and promptly.
Diversify your tree plantings. If your property is dominated by a single oak species, consider planting other species to create a buffer and reduce the risk of losing your entire canopy to a single disease. Bald cypress, southern magnolia, sabal palm, and red cedar are all excellent native alternatives that add diversity to your landscape.
Monitor your oaks regularly. Walk your property periodically and look at your oaks with fresh eyes. Early detection is the single most important factor in successfully managing oak wilt.
The Bigger Picture
Oak wilt is a serious disease, but it’s manageable — especially when caught early. Central Florida’s warm, humid climate creates a slightly different disease dynamic than what’s seen in Texas or the Midwest, and local expertise matters when evaluating and treating affected trees.
If you notice unusual wilting, browning, or leaf drop on any of your oaks — particularly during a time of year when the tree should be green and healthy — don’t ignore it. A quick evaluation from a qualified arborist can mean the difference between treating one tree and losing a dozen.
